For iPhone:
Tip #1: Turn off automatic iCloud and Photos backup when you arrive abroad.
Go to Settings → Cellular → scroll to the bottom, then turn off “iCloud Drive” and “iCloud Backup.”
Repeat this step for photo backups in the same section.
Tip #2: Turn off your Personal Hotspot while abroad.
Go to Settings → Personal Hotspot → turn off “Allow Others to Join.”
Tip #3: According to studies, the average iPhone user has 119 apps.
Many of them connect to the internet frequently to update and use your data.
To monitor and control this, go to Settings → Cellular → scroll down to see your list of apps and their data usage.
For Android:
Tip #1: Turn off automatic sync for accounts you don’t need while abroad.
Go to Settings → Accounts (or Accounts & Sync) → tap the three dots at the top → select “Turn off auto-sync.”
You can manually sync later when on Wi-Fi by going to the accounts menu and selecting “Sync all” or “Sync now.”
Tip #2: Turn off your mobile hotspot while abroad.
Swipe down from the top of the screen → tap Hotspot to turn it off.
If you don’t see the Hotspot option, tap Edit (bottom right corner) and drag Hotspot to your quick settings.
